Caernarfon is a gripping sight: situated on a bay of the same name, surrounded by the mountains of the Snowdonia national park, it seems to be huddled behind the immense castle and medieval walls.
The fortress, built by Edward the First, birthplace of the first English Prince of Wales, has an astonishingly massive aspect. Dominating the town, the ruins of the Roman fort of Segontium testify to its occupation by man for thousands of years.
